We have been using a Nestera Penthouse Coop for a number of years. They are raised 450mm from the floor which means clean out is possible without kneeling and with minimal bending – Hugh suffers from a bad back and finds this great (plus no kneeling on wet ground). The raised coop uses a ladder rather than a ramp meaning that small chicks cannot easily get in and out so we would recommend this coop for mature birds. Our Crested Cream Legbars, Marans and other active breeds easily adapted to the ladder but the heavier less agile Orpingtons struggled although they did learn to get in. If you have very heavy breeds or bantams and ladder access might be a problem then the Lodge which has a ramp might prove a better choice. The space under the coop offers hens good protection from wind and rain during the day and is sufficiently high that many feeders and drinkers can be placed under the coop during Avian Influenza housing restrictions thereby complying with regulations to cover them from material falling from above.
Nestera suggest this size for 2 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Large Fowl like Warrens or 5 Bantams. We find that you can get 3 bonded Orpingtons in the coop.
Developed in the UK over two decades, Nestera recycled plastic chicken coops have been designed for the well-being and comfort of your flock and to guarantee easy cleaning and excellent durability carrying a 25 year guarantee. We challenge you to find another coop manufacturer who offers this length of guarantee!
The Small coop is equipped with one perch and one nesting box
The coop features adjustable ventilation on one side and fixed on the other. They also have excellent thermal insulation to offer comfortable temperatures all year round
With a removable rear wall and roof and easily removable nesting box the coop offers full access to the interior for quick and easy cleaning. There’s no lip at the edge of the floor when the wall is removed, making it very easy to sweep soiled bedding directly from the floor into a container.
Nestera coops have far less places for red mites to hide and reproduce, compared to wooden coops as they have limited joints. Wooden coops generally have lapped wood, provided multiple havens for mites. Being recycled plastic the chicken coops ensures cleaning is easy and complete mite eradication is possible. We use a jet wash on ours!
The coops are made from 9mm-thick recycled plastic. This minimises their environmental impact and also offers a lifespan far greater than any wooden coop. We have been using Nestera coops for years and they have required no maintenance but still look fantastic. The coops are resistant to UV, and won’t degrade over time, which is why they have a guarantee for 25 years!
